How to Make Easy Photo Props with Your Cricut

Sharing is caring!

Recently, my youngest son had a birthday party. I thought it would be fun to make some easy photo props for his party. These are kind of like the things you see in photo booths at weddings. I thought it would be fun for him and his friends to have these to take photos with. The nice thing about making them yourself is that you can customize them to say anything you want and you can even make them match the colour theme of your party. This is a great craft that is quick and easy and looks great.

Supplies to Make Easy Photo Props

  • Speech bubble graphic – there are lots online. You can get right or left facing. You can get all different shapes.
  • Sayings for the speech bubbles. I looked online for ideas. One of the main reasons why I made my own was because most of the ones online were adult oriented.
  • Cardstock – I used 65lb cardstock from Michaels. The colour possibilities are endless. I used blue as the main speech bubble and white, which is used for the lettering.
  • Take out chopsticks – I used these as the sticks. I had considered skewers but they are pretty pointy and I didn’t want anyone to hurt themselves.
  • Glue – I used glue tape as I find it easy to apply but liquid glue, a glue gun or even a glue stick will work as well. I get my glue tape from the dollar store.  I’ve also found 3 packs from Winners.
  • Tape – I used masking tape to attach the chopsticks.

Design your Easy Photo Props

  • Upload the speech bubble graphic into Cricut’s Design Space.
  • Pick a font and type up your sayings.
  • Arrange your sayings on top of the speech bubbles. In order to make this easier, I UNGROUPED the letters so that I could space it and manipulate it the way I wanted. Once you have the letters arranged, WELD them together so that they are 1 item. Don’t weld it to the speech bubble  (hide the bubble to make it easier to select all the letters to weld and then bring the speech bubble back).
  • SLICE the saying with the speech bubble. So what you are doing is cutting out the letters out of the speech bubble. I found it easier to do it this way, as opposed to cutting out all the letters and glueing them one by one on to the speech bubbles.
Don’t forget – when slicing, there can only be TWO different items. So your words need to be welded so that they are as one.
  • Delete all the slice selections. You should be left with a speech bubble that has the letters cut out.
  • Size your speech bubbles to your liking. I made mine 8 inches wide.
  • Use your Cricut to cut it out on cardstock. I made mine blue.
  • Be careful when lifting up from the mat – you will need to have the insides of letters, like the D, P, A, etc.
  • Upload a plain speech bubble and make it the same size. This will be the backing. I made mine white. This will be the colour of the writing. Cut out the same number of speech bubbles that you have with sayings.

  • Glue the backing (in my case white) to the speech bubble with the letters cut out. It will now be double layered.
  • Tape a chopstick to the back so that it can be held easily.

These easy photo props were so much fun to make. You could easily make a bunch in an evening. The double layer of cardstock makes them fairly sturdy and the chopstick makes them easy to hold.
