How to Make an Easy Crochet Hat That Fits! | Free Pattern

Sharing is caring!

I have crocheted many a hat. The trouble I have is the sizing. I follow the pattern and it always ends up too big or too small. I’m not sure why and so I was determined to design a made-to-measure hat that would be easy to work up. So here’s how to make an easy crochet hat that fits.

Most of the time, the hat seems to be too big. I check the measurements and typically have to make a child’s size but it’s still too big. I don’t think I have an unusually small head, but that is the dilemma I face.

So it was time to come up with a foolproof way to make an easy crochet hat that fits.

My Criteria for an Easy Crochet Hat That Fits

  • quick to work up
  • has a nice, subtle texture
  • can be easily modified depending on the design wanted – fold-up brim or slouch style

This hat not only fits me properly – because it’s made to measure, but it’s also super easy. All you have to do is crochet a rectangle – so just a few rows and that’s it.

Supplies Needed

  • 1 skein of Charisma Yarn by Loops and Threads. I love the tweeds in this line of yarn. I also wanted something warm so this is a nice and thick yarn.
  • 5mm crochet hook.
  • yarn sewing needle (I chose one with a big eye since this yarn is quite thick).
  • decorative pom pom (optional).

All you are going to do is crochet a big rectangle. This project is easy for beginners. It’s also a great project to make while watching Netflix and sitting on the sofa.

I chose the HDC stitch because I find that using DC stitches makes the hat too “holey” so it’s not warm. SC seems to take me forever and so HDC seemed to be a nice compromise.

By placing the HDC stitches in the back loop (instead of both loops), it creates a subtle lined texture. I find that by using the Charisma Tweed Yarn, patterns like cables get lost. You can’t really see them. This technique of placing the HDC stitches in the back results in a pattern or texture that is still noticeable with the tweed yarn.

The foundation row is the height or length of the hat. You can adjust this depending on whether or not you want a fold-up brim and whether or not you want it fitted or with a slouch. The longer the foundation row, the longer the hat.

Continue for a total of 25 rows. Do not cut yarn.

The number of rows should equal the circumference of your head. Keep in mind that there will be some stretch to it.

My finished size of the rectangle is 12 x 18. Take into consideration stretch. I find that there is a decent amount of stretch with this yarn. I also find that this yarn tends to bag out a bit after a while so I decided to make it a bit smaller, rather than bigger. This is the measurement that fits my head. You may wish to adjust the sizing according to your head. But once you know the correct size, you can make this easy crochet hat that fits!

With right sides together, SC the 2 ends together. You will essentially have a tube. Cut yarn leaving a 12-inch length.

Folded in half.

With your sewing needle, weave the yarn through the top, circular end so that you can cinch it together. This makes the top of the hat.

Cinch up the top so that it closes.

Attach your pom pom if you wish to have one.

I love a good pom pom.

Yay! An easy crochet hat that fits and doesn’t fall down over my eyes while I walk!

Once you have this formula, it’s easy to make hats now. You just need to know the basic size of the rectangle that you want to make. There will be some flexibility dependent upon how stretchy the yarn is. I find that Charisma has quite a bit of stretch to it.

I made another hat using the same pattern but a lighter-weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Heartland in Badlands – a lovely burgundy colour.

With the Heartland yarn, I started out with a FHDC of 40 stitches and crocheted for 40 rows.

I added a white pom-pom to this hat. I love how it turned out.

Remember what works for me, won’t necessarily work for you. But like I said, once you have the basic measurements – just tweak it depending on the type of yarn you have and how much stretch it has. Then you’ll have the perfect fitting hat!
